The Bake Shop Ghost

I picked this wonderful little book on title alone, because who doesn’t like cake or ghosts? The story revolves around Miss Merriweather, the town sour-puss spinster and bake shop owner. When Miss Merriweather dies, the bake shop closes and the town mourns not her passing, but their loss of delicious goodies. But like all who pass and leave unfinished business, Miss Merriweather’s ghost remains. She runs off the revolving door of chefs who take over her shop until spunky Annie Washington moves in. Annie is not scared or deterred by the ghost of Miss Merriweather. And when the ghost challenges Annie to bake a very special kind of cake, Annie bakes and bakes and bakes and bakes! Always showing Miss Merriweather kindness and respect, Annie finally unlocks the key to Miss Merriweather’s sadness in a sugary-sweet ending - complete with recipe!

I like the illustrations in The Bake Shop Ghost. Marjorie Priceman gives us a delicate ghost, wispy and sad. I think this is important because so easily kids can grasp the concept of ghosts and bring it to a very negative, scary place. And Miss Merriweather has a purpose for her haunting, she needs something for herself - it’s not just about scaring people. Annie Washington is a great heroine. She’s determined to make things right for the ghost and with hard work and perseverance (and the right recipe) it pays off! It’s a pleasure to read books with your kids that set the right example.

Oh yeah…..

I have been sitting here struggling to come up with something to write about since I have too many open wounds to write about my own life right now. Then I remembered that I shot NaBloPoMo to hell last weekend and therefore do not need to put so much pressure on myself to blog everyday. Somedays, like today, I would only spew shit that is only important to me and maybe one other person. And that’s not interesting.

I’ll leave you with this Momdom gem just to give you a glimpse as to why things are the way they are:

Boo (from the bathroom): Maaaaaa-oooommm! I need help whhyyyyyyyyyyy-peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeing.
Me (enters bathroom): Okay.
Boo: My tummy still hurts. I think after we wipe it’s time for some cuddles.
Me (bowing deeply) Yes, master.

As you may or may not know, I an on the board of a non-profit organization called The Eye-Link Foundation. The Eye-Link Foundation makes grants to people who are blind or visually impaired to help them obtain specialized adaptive technologies. Over 80% of blind or visually impaired Minnesotans are unemployed; a computer with speech capabilities will enable them to gain computer skills, search for a job or even work from home. Many elderly Minnesotans suffer from macular degeneration; a scanner with text to speech software maintains independence and helps in reading documents - mail, cards, recipes, newspapers, etc.

I am very proud to be a part of Eye-Link. But we need your help. NaBloPoMo - FAIL!

I couldn’t even blog for 15 days in a row. What the hell is wrong with me? Yesterday went by in a blur of too much beer at the Vikings game to too long of a dinner with kiddos watching AFV, and then the arrival of The Alaskan Poet. I stayed up too late reading Moonlight in Odessa - from MNReads.com - and then dealt with Boo sneaking into our room twice.

I did however get to have breakfast at the usual place with the usual suspects. Birthday Girl and The Twinks joined us, so it was lots of eggs and hashbrowns for all.

I’m far too tired to do or say anything intelligent so I’ll just stop right here.

Wherein beauty stops me in my tracks…

If you have not read Jonathan Carroll, you should put it on the list of things to do in the next six months. The man is amazing. I read The Ghost in Love and it has been, by far, the best book I have read all year.

Naturally, I follow him on Twitter. And today he posted a link to this picture. It’s blind children studying a globe, circa 1914.

Clearly these children are in love with the globe. And to me, it’s not so much that they are in love with the world, but that they are in love with the tool that helps them expand their understanding. This is so apt, it just makes me sit up and take notice of messages being sent to me and the fact that I remain open enough to receive them.

If you do not know, my father is blind. Ten years ago, he and my mother started a foundation to grant blind people in Minnesota adaptive technology - mainly computers with specialized software. I’m on the board of this wonderful organization and we are about to start a big fundraising push with the help of GiveMN.org. Over 80% of blind people are unemployed, many of them with little or no access to a computer. Many elderly people suffer from macular degeneration. Something as simple as a CCTV will give them more independence. For blind students a braille note taking device greatly influences their decision to continue moving forward with their education.

I don’t believe that we can change the world. It’s too vast and lovely; and frankly, I think it’s fine the way it is. We can however change how we think and act. We create and learn. These children are holding the world in their hands, but will they ever comprehend the abyss in which in functions? Can any of us? But giving someone a tool to help them navigate the abyss is like giving hope. And that is what I see in these children…hope.

I saw this on Ann Leary’s blog a few days (weeks) ago and loved it. And on days like today wherein I have too much to say and can’t say it all; days like today wherein I can feel myself already editing things I haven’t written or said, I feel it’s best just not to say or do anything. So I pull a poem off of somewhere else to give you a least a little piece a beauty, because I feel so horribly horribly shitty.

Boys and their Ink….

Sweet Chocolate Jesus! I love tattoos. I do. Men with tattoos are hot. I just love it.

I waited until I was 35 to get my first tat. And it was meaningful and significant and I’ve been plotting my next tattoo ever since. So imagine how pleasantly surprised I was when while watching Firefly last night, I catch a glimpse of Nathan Fillion’s hip tattoo. Holy Hannah! How much hotter does this Canadian get? I mean, I don’t usually go for the blondes, but damn!

I must admit that I’m at little late to the Nathan Fillion Fangirl party. I didn’t watch Castle last year and I didn’t watch Firefly. I only started watching Castle this year because Kelly Osbourne is on Dancing With The Stars. So really it’s Kelly Osbourn’s fault. But I’m happy to say that I’m catching up on everything with the help of Hulu and Netflix. Plus I can stalk him on Twitter, which is always fun.

And it all comes back to me really, really thinking it’s time for my next tattoo.

Eleven Eleven

I went back and reread the posts from the last three years. In no way am I over my Mom’s death. The last 36 hours have been hard. I feel this day coming and it puts me in a bad mood. Then when it gets here I’m grouchy and sad. I should be. I lost my Mom to a horrible disease. She was young and pretty and deserved more. Much more.

I would love to say that her passing has brought my Father and I closer, but it hasn’t. Not yet anyway.

It’s just really hard to go through this day without a kind word from anyone close to me.

I miss my Mom. Terribly.

Casa de Poop

Both kids are super poopy today? What the hell? (I almost spelled ’super’ ’souper’, just for comedic effect.) The Buns has had two super poopy blow-out that required baths and clothing changes. Boo on the other hand still has a squirmy tummy. My hands are raw from washing them so much. Yeah, I do feel a little like Lady Macbetch.

By the way, Happy Birthday Neil Gaiman.
